“Bellona" (with detail), 1633, Rembrandt.
“Bellona, the Roman goddess of war, is presented by Rembrandt as a rather plain “girl next door,” probably to suggest that the new Dutch Republic was ready to repel foreign forces. Images of Mars and his sister Bellona occasionally decorated the headquarters of civic guard companies. The shield, with its frightful face of Medusa, was added at a late stage of work, probably in response to seeing a version of Rubens’s well-known painting of a severed Medusa’s head." (via)

Tyke (1974 – August 20, 1994) was an African elephant who performed with Circus International of Honolulu, Hawaii. On August 20, 1994, during a performance at the Neal Blaisdell Center, she killed her trainer and mauled her groomer, causing severe injuries. Tyke then bolted from the arena and ran through the streets of the Kakaako central business district for more than 30 minutes. Police fired 86 shots at the animal, who eventually collapsed from the wounds and died. While the majority of the attack in the arena was recorded on video tape, additional footage captured the attack on a local publicist, which took place outside of the building.

we torture them, and as soon as they fight back, we kill them.

Just look at the fear in that baby’s eyes. Look at it. Look at it and tell me that you think a circus, or the zoo, or seaworld is okay.
